Catholic High School
You have invested in a solid Catholic education for many years to prepare for a Catholic high school education. You are well prepared to meet the challenges offered in a college preparatory high school environment.
There are many Catholic high schools to choose from in the Bay Area and the East Bay. Students from St. John Catholic School have been accepted to the following Catholic high schools in the past five years:
College and beyond
St. John Catholic School has a proud heritage of having our graduates accepted to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the Bay Area ... and the nation!

High School Placement Test
St. John Catholic School students have historically performed very well on the High School Placement Test (HSPT), which is administered the first weekend in January each year at most all Catholic high schools in the East Bay.
Your application fee to the school(s) of your choice also include the testing fees, which average about $90. You may take the test at the school where you apply, or another campus of your choice. Just specify which high school(s) you want the test results sent. This is just that ... a PLACEMENT test. The exam is just one of many assessment tools the high schools use to determine your eligibility and possibility for success in a college preparatory program. Your grade report, application essay, applicant interview, letters of recommendation, and ITBS scores all factor in to your eligibility. St. John Catholic School offers in-class preparation and instruction to help all students be successful on the HSPT. It is part of our school curriculum in 8th grade in mathematics and language arts. Your 8th grade fees cover the cost of the workbooks; Mrs. Gonsalves, Mrs. Catalan, and Ms. Hansen will begin preparing your students in October. |
Public High School
Many St. John Catholic School students attend local public schools in the San Lorenzo Unified School District, and even Hayward Unified, Castro Valley Unified, and San Leandro Unified. Please contact your local school district main offices for information about registration, class schedules, campus tours, athletics requirements, etc. The registration process for most public high schools begins in January.
Our graduates who attend the area public high schools do well! We have students involved in athletics, student government, leadership, and more at San Lorenzo High School, Castro Valley High School, Arroyo High School, East Bay Arts High School, and San Leandro High. Letters of Recommendation
When you apply to a Catholic high school, you will be directed to print a Recommendation form. At the top of the form, be sure to check the high school(s) where you are applying. Have a parent/guardian sign and date the form, which gives SJCS the authorization to release grades and test scores to the high schools where you apply.
For your convenience, a .pdf file of the recommendation form is provided below. Note: You will NOT receive the recommendation form back; we will send it to the appropriate high school(s) on your behalf before the deadline. ![]()
Scholarships and Awards
St. John Catholic School graduates have received numerous awards and scholarships upon acceptance to Catholic schools in our area. You will be invited to apply for scholarships by the high school you have applied to if you meet their qualifications.
St. John Catholic School has a legacy of successfully preparing our graduates for high achievement and leadership in high school and beyond. |
Financial Aid
- Financial aid is available for many students and their families to make attending a Catholic high school possible.
- If you currently receive financial aid at St. John through BASIC or FACE, your aid is transferable to a Catholic school in our diocese.
- Families are encouraged to apply for financial aid at the time you apply to the school of your choice. Current income tax and earning statements are required.
- Some high schools offer a financial aid workshop for prospective students and their families. Visit the website of the school(s) you are considering for dates and times.
